A born and raised native of Philadelphia, Shannon Newby fell in love with filmmaking at a very early age. By nine he told his parents he wanted to be "a movie director.' As an introverted youth, he incessantly watched movies and read avidly.

While in the eighth grade Shannon found a mentor in his language arts teacher who encouraged him to come out of his shell and participate in a city wide Black History Oratorical contest. He won first place with his speech: Apartheid the Struggle Continues.

He presented his speech at major events and colleges all over the city and was honored on prime time national television, along with then retired Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger at the constitution bicentennial celebration.

Several months later Shannon's father bought a video camera that Shannon soon procured. At thirteen years old his career as a filmmaker was underway. His success in the Black History Oratorical contest garnished him an offer to attend the Philadelphia High school for the Creative and Performing Arts.

He accepted. During his tenure he acted in several play's, again participated in the Black History Oratorical contest, worked in stage and set production and acted in a Philadelphia arts sponsored teen improvisational group 'Choice.

' After high school he experienced a short stint as a stand up comedian. He went on to attend the Community College of Philadelphia studying Television and Motion Picture Production courses. During his enrollment he worked in all facets of production on several student and independent films, and produced, directed and edited two notable documentaries 'Life on the Blacktop' and 'I Have a Name.

' He also wrote a popular opinion editorial column for the college newspaper. After college he worked at the Coatesville Veteran Administration Medical Center as the audio visual media technician, had editorial articles published by the Philadelphia Daily News, and freelanced on several independent film productions throughout the city of Philadelphia.

In 1995 Shannon started the film and video production company 'Out the House Motion Pictures,' and soon after left his position at the medical center to write, produce, and direct the feature film 'Dirty Laundry.

' 'Dirty Laundry' went on to win a best director award at the Atlantic City film festival and a best feature film award at the Philadelphia International film festival. After the film's festival run, Shannon received inequitable offers from several home video distributors.

Unwilling to accept the offers, he decided to learn the business of video distribution and within a year successfully self distributed the film nationwide.
