He had been fighting a rare neurodegenerative disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, for six years. In search of a cure, his Rainwater Charitable Foundation had spent more than $50 million to draw together top researchers into a group called the Tau Consortium, named after the protein that causes the disease and which is also a factor in Alzheimers. Their work will continue. Rainwater got his start at age 26 managing assets for the Bass family of Fort Worth in the 1970s.
