While working as a reporter for United Press International, he was introduced to his Untouchables co-writer, Eliot Ness. After several rounds of scotch at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the two agreed to co-write a book.
Soon after its publication, The Untouchables sold more than 1.5 million copies.
He grew up in Woodbury, New Jersey. He died of heart failure in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
