Michelle Cutler grew up in downtown Baltimore with a background in fine arts, self-taught in her mother's painting studio. She studied photography and painting at Parson's School of Design and The Maryland Institute College of Art where she started two music and theatre performance groups, recorded an album, and toured with her band.

She promptly defected to East Berlin where she became part of an art and film collective in Prenzlauerberg. Three years and six countries later, Michelle returned to New York to complete her undergraduate studies at Hunter College/CUNY in photography and film and went directly into the Graduate Film Program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts where she was awarded The Walter Manley and David Golden Scholarships for her work.

She was an IFP/New York Project Involve Honoree and has directed six short films and four original plays that have premiered and played in various festivals. In Los Angeles, she worked as a co-screenwriter with the DGA-award winning director Nicolai Fugisig on an action/drama set in Brazil, and freelances as a commercial treatment writer for top directors like Antoine Fuqua, Aaron Ruell, Stylewar, and Martin Granger.

Alicia Keys' Big Pita Little Pita productions and Miramax/Disney optioned her feature script, Needle, about a young woman who aspires to win a DJ battle to escape her trouble home. As of June 2010 she is working on an Untitled Dance Project, a feature script based on a true story, for producers Nicole Rocklin and Blye Faust (Rocklin/Faust) based at Alcon Entertainment (The Blind Side).
