Matthew Bate is a multi-award winning director whose films have premiered at Sundance, SXSW, New Directors New Films, Rotterdam, HotDocs, Melbourne Film Festival and many more. Matt's feature documentary, Shut Up Little Man! An Audio Misadventure, premiered in the World Cinema Documentary competition at Sundance 2011, and was selected in the 40th New Directors/New Films at the MOMA and Lincoln Center New York.

Matt was the recipient of the 2014 David and Joan Williams Documentary Fellowship and his hybrid drama-doc I Want to Dance Better at Parties took out the Dendy Award for Best Film also in 2014. His latest feature film Sam Klemke's Time Machine premiered at Sundance 2015 and won Artistic Vision Awards at DocAviv and the Australian Writers Guild Award for Best Screenplay.

He is a co-director and founder of Closer Productions based in Adelaide.
