Jonathan Silver grew up in Washington DC and Potomac, MD. His father Jack was a multi media artist who was a pioneer of computer run, multi slide projector shows which he created for the Smithsonian, NASA, and other agencies.
Jonathan left USC film school after a year and a half to work as an on-set personal PA to Ridley Scott on many iconic commercial shoots. After working with Ridley Scott, and working as a PA on feature films including The Doors and Awakenings, Jonathan started working as an on set PA for David Fincher at Propaganda Films.
Although Fincher had yet to release his first film Alien 3, Jonathan considered him one of his favorite directors, and an early mentor. Jonathan worked on some of David Fincher's iconic commercials, including Coca Cola Blade Roller, and Nike's Barkley on Broadway.
While at Propaganda, he also worked with directors Spike Jonze and Mark Romanek.Silver learned to edit at Propaganda, and director Antoine Fuqua enlisted him to edit his first music video. Jonathan went on to cut dozens of iconic and award winning music videos for directors including F Gary Gray, Francis Lawrence, Paul Boyd, Stephane Sednaoui, Matthew Rolston, and others; for artists including Tom Petty, REM, Diddy, Jay Z, Dr Dre, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, TLC, Christina Aguilera, Nelly Furtado, Timbaland, Mary J Blige, Garbage, POD, Third Eye Blind, and many more.
He began editing feature films and designing main title sequences and special sequences for movies. Jonathan designed the main title sequence for Kiss the Girls. The BBC review of Kiss the Girls said "The brooding menace of the title sequence, with all its fire and seduction, certainly leads us to suspect a Hitchcockian blur between psychosis and romance.
" Jonathan worked with Kiss the Girls director Gary Fleder again on his sci fi film Impostor, on which he was an additional editor and designed special sequences of the film. He also worked as an editor on the short film Most, which was nominated for an Academy Award for best short film in 2004.
Jonathan also designed the main end title sequence of Notorious, the Biggie bio pic, and was an additional editor on the film.Silver has directed music videos for Ice Cube (Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It), as well as Jay Rock and Lil Wayne (All My Life).
Jonathan once attended a 6 week intensive directing workshop at NYU.His long creative relationship with director F Gary Gray led to some consultation on Straight Outta Compton, and working as an additional editor on the upcoming Men in Black International.
Jonathan is married to Christiana Silver, an artist and yoga instructor from New York who attended the Rhode Island School of Design.
